Living Room Makeover

When we moved into our DIY project of a house, one of the first rooms on the list was the living (are my sons bedroom so he could feel settled). We spend so much time in here, we felt we needed a sanctuary, somewhere calm to sit with friends, while the rest of the house became the building project.

Before we moved in we made a scrapbook with the before photos and inspo pictures for the future. So excuse that the before photo below is a photo of the scrapbook.

No shade to the previous owners. This just wasn’t our style. We felt the space could be better used, we like storage that hides the bits and pieces of everyday life and the vertical blinds still left us feeling exposed using this room. The dark colours were I guess cosy, but also made the room feel dark. The electric fireplace was one of the cheapest available, coming attached to the fake wood surround. Just not our taste. So…

The first job was to remove the wallpaper (which thankfully came off easily with this hand steamer). We washed the walls down with sugar soap and painting them in the pink.

I first tried painting the fireplace surround but it still didn’t fit with the style of the house, so we removed the fireplace nervously, unsure what would be behind. I’m so glad we did as, after removing some nailed on board we found the original fireplace complete with the grate!

We freshened it up with black Hammerite paint (this won’t be a working fireplace, but if yours is make sure you use paint safe for that) on both the inside and the grate to freshen up. We bought a second hand wooden fireplace surround in the Facebook marketplace (amazing place for bargains) and adjusted the size, along with a lick of paint.

The hearth tiles are currently steciled on, though we wil be replacing this hearth at some point and covering in real tiles. I just haven’t found any I’ve fallen in love with yet.

The sofas are incredibly comfy (we tested a tonne!). One is a sofa bed as we like to have famil and friends come to stay.

We built the TV unit and floating shelves with MDF, primed and painted white. We had planned to do similar on the other side of the chimney breast but now like the space.

This is my favourite room in our home in the evening, because with the candles lit, and fairy lights switched on, under a blanket with a nacho chilli, it couldn’t get more cosy really.
